History of the Fouta Jalon

The Fulbe people consider themselves relative newcomers in Guinea, West Africa. In the 15th century, the Fulbe began to migrate into the mountainous region of west and central Guinea, known as the Fouta Jalon. The region was first organized as a separate political entity as a result of the Fulbe jihad (Muslim holy war) in the late 1720s. As a Muslim theocratic state, Fouta Jalon dominated both central and coastal Guinea until it came under French domination in 1897.

The Fulbe have great pride in the leaders of their past. Karamoko Alfa led the war which brough the region under the control of the Muslim Fulbe. He was a powerful leader and the first ruler of the newly founded state. Those who succeeded him became known as Almaamis. Alfa Yaayaa, a strong leader from Labé, is still hailed as a leader of the resistance movement against the French, against whom he worked until his arrest subsequent exile in 1905.

The descendent of another resistance leader, Ahmed Sekou Toure (1922-1984), followed in his ancestor's footsteps by also resisting French rule in Guinea. Toure led the labor party, Parti Democratique de Guinee (Democratic Party of Guinea) to declare independence from the French community in 1958. Guinea was the only French colony to vote "no" on the referendum put forward by Charles de Gaulle to keep these colonies in the French West African community. As a result, Guinea was cut off from financial aid and other assistance programs from France. In the midst of isolation, Guineans developed a strong national identity. Meanwhile, Toure garnered support from the Soviet Union and other communist countries. As the years passed, Toure did not allow for presidential elections nor did he allow for the formation of any other political parties. Though he began as a political hero, Toure deteriorated into a brutal dictator and began facing opposition from various groups. Nevertheless, Toure continued to rule Guinea until his death.

Within weeks of Toure's death, the military took control of the government and established the Second Guinean Republic with Lansana Conte as president. In the early 1990s, many changes were underway to help Guinea institute a multiparty, democratic government. Presidential and parliamentary elections took place in 1993 and in 1998. Conte has continued to serve as president, having won both of these elections.

The next elections are scheduled for December 2003

When Guinea opened up to the outside world following Toure's death, it was a poor, undeveloped country despite its vast, untapped resources. Nearly twenty years later, Guinea is still a poor and under-developed state. The Fulbe maintain that Guinea will one day rise to overcome the obstacles of its past and gather strength from its heritage.

Who are the Fulbe?

The Fulbe of Guinea are a large people group located in the Western African nation of Guinea and in surrounding countries. The majority live in the Republic of Guinea in the Fouta Jalon region, an area of mountains and plateaus. They speak a Niger-Congo language called Fouta Jalon Pular. On the plateaus of the Fouta Jalon, there are grassy plains and fields of fonio, a local grain. Fulbe herders settled in this region over two hundred years ago and have since spread into other parts of Guinea and into surrounding countries. These Fulbe are a subgroup of the Fula or Fulani located throughout West Africa. Today the majority of this subgroup lives in urban centers and many are involved in commerce.
These huts are on a hillside overlooking a town in the valley.
What are their lives like?
Farming is one of the main ways the Fulbe make a living. Staple crops include fonio, rice, and peanuts. Cattle herds, along with sheep and goats, are the primary livestock. The cattle are not the humped breed of other Fulani, but a native Fouta Jalon breed resistant to the disease carrying tsetse fly.
The majority of Fulbe today live in towns and cities, with the traditional mud walled hut replaced by brick and cement houses with corrugated metal roofs. Houses are often located in walled compounds where a man and one or more wives live with their children and other members of an extended family.
The Fulbe Futa are patriarchal, but the mother exerts a certain amount of power in the day to day running of the house especially during the frequent absences of the father. The husband/father is the one to make all the important decisions and represent the family. The decisions of the father can be discussed, but the father is always to be respected and never to be proven wrong or embarrassed in front of his wives or children. The father/husband is considered the provider of food, clothes, shelter, and medicine, but often the wives are the ones who get involved in various money making adventures to make ends meet.

Technology has made some advancements in Guinea. A few satellite dishes can be seen in cities, towns, and even villages.
These children are going to the river to fetch water for their families. Often times, they will use this time to laugh and play with each other.
Families work together. It is part of their existence. The women rise early to sweep their houses before walking to the market. As soon as they return home, they begin the job of cooking, which includes lighting a charcoal or wood fire. If there is more than one woman in the compound, the ladies share the responsibility of cooking. For example, one cooks for three days and the other one cooks for three days. The children are often asked to draw water, gather wood, catch a chicken for dinner, wash clothes at the river, do dishes, and care for younger siblings. Staying in good favor with the family is important.

Oumou Sangare-

Oumou Sangare
Oumou Sangare-
The Wasulu people are ethnic Fulani who have adopted a Manding language close to Bambara, Bamanankan. Wasulu is a dialect of
Bamanankan in Mali, but also spoken in Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire near their borders with Mali.Oumou Sangare, the Internationally know singer is originally from the Wasulu group of Mali.Oumou Sangaré is the leading female star of the Wasulu sound, which is based on an ancient tradition of hunting rituals mixed with songs about devotion, praise, and harvest played with pentatonic (five-note) melodies. In addition to the flute and violin her sound is accompanied by the sound of the scraping kèrègnè, women play the flé, a calabash strung with cowrie shells, which they spin and throw into the air in time to the music. Sangaré most often sings about love and the importance of freedom of choice in marriage. At the age of 21 Oumou recorded her first album, Moussoulou (Women), released in 1990. It caused a great stir because of the subjects in the lyrics which were not usually publicly expressed, most notably her big hit 'Diaraby Nene (The Shivers of Passion)', and also her chosen rhythm. Oumou's songs use the resonating jittery sound of the kamalengoni - the youth version of the hunter's harp. The radical mission of her songs is to highlight the issues that women in Mali face, especially polygamy.Further albums in the 1990s were Ko Sira and Worotan. You don't have to look very far to find one of Oumou's songs on African music compilations Empresses of Africa and Africanesque are just a couple. Several of Oumou's songs feature on the soundtrack of the powerful movie Beloved (1998).
Since the CD Worotan 5 years ago, Oumou has concentrated on producing music for the Malian market and a few other projects, including the building of a hotel in Bamako called Hotel Wasulu and touring countries in Africa.
In January 2003 Oumou participated in Festival in the Desert in the northern part of Mali, her presence was notable because of the recent civil war in the North. Her song Wayena is on the festival CD. Later the same year Oumou was at international summer festivals including WOMAD festival in Reading UK. She was in London for the Jazz Festival in November as part of a major international tour.
Oumou Sangare was a featured artist at the 2003 Smithsonian Institute Folklife Festival in Washington, DC USA. She has a new internationally released double CD as well in 2003, simply entitled Oumou; it includes notes on the songs provided by Oumou herself. The CD is a 20-track compilation of 12 songs from her existing CDs plus 8 tracks not previously on CD. DJs are already promoting 'Yala' as one of the best dance tracks on the album. A few of the songs give advice to young people, such as Djorolen and NGuatu. Oumou's performances on stage are truly spectacular as she and her dancers spin calabashes in the air.
